Hey Sarah, I love your IG page and how it is full of great recommendations for early 30s skin! It'd be great to know more about you and how you got into skincare?
Thanks Emilie, I got into skincare in my very early teens when I started wearing make-up. I had acne skin in my teens so I was forever trying to find a solution.
You feature a lot of Korean beauty products on your IG. What was it that got you obsessed with Kbeauty?
I became obsessed with Korean skincare when I went to Seoul 2.5 years ago and I went again last year and stocked up on skincare products. Korean cosmetics are innovative, effective and affordable. Korean toners compared to western brands are packed with more skin beneficial ingredients. Fermented ingredients work well for my skin as they have ability to penetrate deeper into the skin and Korean brands create some amazing products. I also love hanbang medicinal skincare based products.
What's your everyday morning skincare routine? What are your go-to products?
In the morning I use a gentle cleanser and toner to ensure my skin is clean. Skin produces sweat in the evening so it’s essential to make sure my skin is clean without stripping natural oils. I then add a hydrating toner followed with serums and vitamin C. I’m using an emulsion vitamin C so this goes on after my serums. Next I apply eye cream, moisturiser and finally sun cream is a must. I keep advocating to my non-skincare addicts to apply sun cream everyday even in the winter.
What's your everyday makeup routine like? What are your go-to products?
I enjoy the art of putting on make-up. I start with my a primer, foundation and concealer. I like using a sili sponge as it uses less product. For brows, I use a browcara and gel. Benefit makes really good brow products but I have been really conscious about brands that test on animals so I’m going to move away from cosmetic brands that are not cruelty free once I have finished my stash. I’ve been loving glossier cloud paint in haze, it gives a natural flush. For my eyes, I stick to nudes-brown smoky look as I work in a corporate office so nothing too garish. I finish off with mascara and a lip tint. If I can be bothered, I will do a wing eye liner.
What's your night time skincare routine? What are your go-to products?
My night routine starts with a triple cleanse. When I get home late from work, I remove everything with a micellar water cleanser. Then after dinner, I double cleanse using an oil and gentle foam cleanser. I’ve fallen in love with Bonair blue smoother cleansing oil. It contains fermented ingredients and is a bit of luxury but I really do enjoy the ritual of removing the day’s impurities that includes stresses of work. Next, I ensure my skin is thoroughly cleansed by using a toner and after I pat a hydrating toner into my skin.
Next, I will add a cocktail of serums; always an anti-ageing serum and retinol. My favourite serum at the moment is the IUNIK propolis vitamin synergy serum, it helps repair compromised skin barrier as well as nourishing and brightening the skin. It contains 70% propolis extract. It’s a great skin pick me up. I will use a sheet mask 3-4 times a week, exfoliate and a mud mask 2-3x a week for a deep clean and slough off dead skin cells. Finally, since it’s getting colder in London, I like to add couple drops of oil mixed with my moisturiser. Does that sound a lot? I do my skincare while watching TV so it doesn’t feel like a chore.
If you were to recommend 5 Kbeauty products for a friend who's never tried KBeauty before, what 5 products would they be?
A sun cream is a must. I really like the Missha suncream SPF 50. It blocks damaging UV rays and it feels really elegant on the skin; it’s non-sticky and fast absorbing.
Fermented skincare is my jam- my favourite is Whamisa organic toner; I’m on my 3rd bottle. I’ve noticed improvement to my skin texture and suppleness.
I love Bonair rose illuminator drop. This gem made it to my wedding skincare routine, it’s an oil emulsion that gives a beautiful glow. Speaking of glow, a firm favourite and forever repurchase is Swanicoco’s ginseng plant stem serum. It’s another product that made it to my wedding skincare wardrobe.
Finally, a gentle cleanser it’s important for clear and healthy skin without stripping the skin of natural oils. There’s so many on the market you can’t go wrong. A cult favourite and affordable is CORX low ph good morning cleanser. This is great for someone wanting to explore kbeauty COSRX is a good brand to start out with. The brand is basic but they have some great products to build a kbeauty routine.
Is there any Kbeauty product (skincare or makeup) that is currently on your wish list?
So many! Where do I start? Acwell licorice pH balancing cleansing toner for my 3rd cleansing step. I would like to try products from hanbang brand, Atoclassic. I’m From Mugwort essence and wash off mask, influenced by YT Eunice @euniunni where I first heard of the brand. But the decision to purchase was most likely by my skincare friend Kar @karwaii. He influenced the #fellowshipoftheskin gang to buy.
I also want to try more products from fermented skincare brands; Bonair, Swanicoco and of course the luxe Sulwhasoo- I want their eye cream. On the wishlist are also Klair’s new suncream and midnight blue calming cream. I tried a sample of the midnight cream and it helped calm skin irritations. There’s probably more as the wishlist, it just keeps growing.
We want to know even more about you!
Favourite Korean dish
Naengmyeon with BBQ pork. Korean cold noodles in vinegary broth. My mouth is
salivating as I type.
Favourite Kpop band
I used to be really in 2PM in my younger years. When I researched the rise of
BTS world domination I got sucked into their music.
Fav spot in the world
I don’t really just have one. Some places are sentimental. Prague, where my boyfriend proposed to me, Malta where I got married and Bali where we had our mini honeymoon. I guess out of the three, it has to be Malta.
Fav item of clothing now
PJs- it’s hibernating season
You are the reason- Leona Lewis and Callum Scott. It was our first dance.
I don’t have a favourite but on the plane to Bali, I watched Be with You, it’s a Korean tear jerker.
