Hey Rhiannon! Thanks for taking part in my KBeauty Stars series! I love your passion for KBeauty on your IG (@rhiannonrecommends). Can you tell us a bit more about yourself?
Thanks Emilie! I’m 24 and live in Reading, Berkshire with my partner of 7 years. I’m a qualified accountant (although that doesn’t mean I can control my own spending!) and I enjoy spending my spare time reading, watching Netflix and taking part in quizzes.
I love travelling, last year I was lucky enough to tick Norway off my list and see the Northern Lights which was one of the best experiences of my life. I would love to explore more of Scandinavia and Northern Europe.
You're also based in the UK like me. How did you discover the world of KBeauty?
I think it was through online forums, such as Reddit. In about 2015/16 I came across r/asianbeauty and the rest is history! I created my Instagram account in 2016 to chat beauty and skincare and have been very lucky to make some great friends and attend amazing brand events and group meet ups.
What was it that got you obsessed with Kbeauty?
I’ve always been interested in skincare from a young age and when I discovered K Beauty I was struck by how fun it was in comparison to Western skincare. I of course started out with sheetmasks - everyone’s entry into K Beauty I’m sure! - brands such as Etude House and Tony Moly and from there it developed!
The packaging is also so unique and fresh. Each brand has their own style, some are more ‘kawaii’ like Tony Moly where as others have a more simplistic approach, echoing their own ethos such as Pyunkang Yul or Cosrx.
Do you notice a difference between KBeauty and Western skincare?
Yes, definitely. To me, Asian skincare focuses more on taking care of the skin as a whole, rather than individual concerns. I also find it to be quite playful as well as being results driven.
I think in Western culture, skincare is almost secondary to makeup. Although I think this is now changing, it still seems like there are a lot of people who use makeup to cover their imperfections and then take it all off with a wipe and just put on moisturiser. Skincare almost seems to be a chore. I find K Beauty encourages you to really take care of your skin’s needs (the now infamous 7 or 10 step routines for example) and to take time for yourself.
What's your everyday morning skincare routine?
I like to mix K Beauty and Western products in my routines. I really like Korean cleansers, toners and serums and of course sun screens but I also really enjoy Western treatment products such as exfoliators.
Recently I’ve been keeping my morning routine very simple. I’ve started swapping my morning cleanse for plain water and a flannel instead and I feel that with this, my skin breaks out less and is less oily during the day.
After this, I use a mist before my Vitamin C serum. I’m currently using the Drunk Elephant C-Firma but I’ve also used the Tiam My Signature C Source and Wishtrend Pure Vitamin C which are both more of a watery texture. Next I use a light moisturiser such as Thank You Farmer True Water Deep Emulsion. Once all my steps have absorbed, I always use an SPF. My current ‘go to’ is also from Thank You Farmer, the Water Sun Cream SPF50.
What's your everyday makeup routine like?
My every day makeup is quite minimal and natural. I like an illuminating primer before applying a natural base. If I want light coverage I use Glossier Skin Tint or for a more medium coverage I like Missha BB Cream. I always make sure my brows and mascara are done, I would not feel like me without! I always like to have a fresh pink blush, Hourglass is my favourite brand for blushes, and a glow from my trusty Mac highlighter. If I do need to powder I reach for the Innisfree No Sebum Mineral Powder. A little goes a long way with this and leaves my skin with a natural velvety finish.
I haven’t had that much experience with Korean makeup, although I do have some new products on the way to me which I will definitely post about on my Instagram!
What's your night time skincare routine?
I always double cleanse at night, first with the Nature Republic Camomile Oil Cleanser and then a second cleanse with Cerave Hydrating Cleanser. If I’m using an exfoliant I would do this next but most nights I move onto using a hydrating mist and then a treatment serum for my pigmentation. I really love NIOD Re:Pigment for this. If I’m feeling dehydrated I will then use a hydrating serum, I’ve really liked the Urang Pink Everlasting Ampoule as well as Thank You Farmer Miracle Age Repair Toner.
Some nights I like to relax with a sheet mask, I really look forwards to taking this time for myself. Some of my favourite brands are Jumiso, A By Bom and Dear Packer. After patting in any excess essence from the mask I will either use an oil or moisturiser depending on how my skin feels. My current favourites are the Skin House Marine Active Cream and the Urang Brightening Blue Oil Serum.
If you were to recommend 5 Kbeauty products for a friend who's never tried KBeauty before, what 5 products would they be?
I think I would start off with a variety of skincare products to create a mini routine. To begin, the Urang Creamy Bubble Foam Cleanser followed by the Hada Labo Gokujyun Premium for a hydrating serum. I would also pick the 23.5N Rice Soothing Active+ Essence to brighten and hydrate. To finish the routine I would choose a moisturiser, maybe the Cosrx Advanced Snail 92 All In One Cream for some of that Korean snaily goodness followed by my current favourite sunscreen, Thank You Farmer Water Sun Cream SPF50.
Is there any Kbeauty product (skincare or makeup) that is currently on your wish list?
The Jumiso skincare range for sure! Their masks are some of my all time favourites so I really want to try their new Vitamin C Serum. Another of my favourite brands Urang also has a new Clarifying Blue Mask out. I love wash off masks, and this has really caught my eye!
I also have a couple of items from my wish list on the way to me, the Laneige Sleeping Lip Mask which I stil can’t believe I haven’t tried before, along with some items from a new brand Sioris which is an environmentally responsible and ‘clean’ brand. Their product’s ingredients vary during the year according to what is in season which I think is really intriguing.
