Hey Elisa! Thanks for taking part in this interview series about Kbeauty bloggers on Instagram! It's so cool to interview you because you were one of first KBeauty influencers I followed on IG. What's also so cool is that you're the biggest KBeauty influencer in the Netherlands. Can you tell us a bit more about yourself?
Thank you so much Emilie! I am Elisa Lee, born and living in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. I absolutely love Korean beauty. I am one of the first Korean beauty bloggers worldwide, who started blogging about Korean beauty in 2010 and I have never stopped since. I became the largest Korean beauty influencer in The Netherlands. My love for Korean beauty became bigger and bigger and I have got great results after using Korean skincare products. Feel free to find me at @sokobeauty on instagram and on Sokobeauty on Youtube.
Last time that I was in Seoul in South Korea was end of May 2018, and I really had a blast! It is such a skincare and make up paradise in Myeongdong, I had my first Korean facial, had lots of collaborations with Youtubers and Korean brands like Neogen while I was there. Also, I literally loved all the Korean food I had during my trip in Seoul. Can’t wait to go back for some nice samgyetang again!
Your IG page (@sokobeauty) is full of your amazing KBeauty finds. I love checking it out for ideas on what to try next! What inspired you to start blogging about KBeauty on IG?
Before I started with blogging on IG, I had a blog called Memorable days. I started that blog in 2010, where I shared reviews of Korean beauty products. Due to my fulltime job and more responsibilities, I decided to stop blogging on my blog, and started my IG @sokobeauty. I started that 2 years ago. I always hoped that Korean beauty will become big one day, and that more and more people get to know the skincare methods that they have. It is just amazing compared to many European & American brands.
I absolutely love the #abcommunity (Asian beauty community) on IG, and I love sharing my thoughts about Korean beauty products, so I kept on writing my reviews on my IG. The #abcommunity has grown so much ever since and everybody is helpful and love sharing their thoughts about Korean beauty products and share their collection. This really motivates me to keep on blogging on IG.
A lot of people get introduced into the KBeauty world through your content. How did you first get into KBeauty?
9 years ago, I lived in Asia for a year and around that time Korean beauty started to become popular in Asia. I was searching for a good foundation at that time, and all products in Europe were just too orange for me and didn’t suit my skintype and/or skintone. So I bought the famous Missha BB cream back then in Asia and my love for Korean beauty started. It was the perfect match for my skintone & skintype and it has SPF, which protected my skin from UV rays. After that product, I started trying many Korean skincare products.
What was it that got you obsessed with Kbeauty?
Definitely the quality-price ratio. You can find so many amazing skincare products for an affordable price, and with great ingredients too! I also love the Korean skincare philosophy and layering skincare products. I became obsessed with it after seeing great results on my skin after using it.
What's your everyday morning skincare routine? What are your go-to products?
I cleanse my skin with lukewarm water when I wake up. I only use a cleanser in the morning when my skin feels greasy. After that, I use a toner, essence, serum, eye cream, moisturizer and sun gel. My current favourite product for my morning routine has got to be the Earth’s recipe sun gel! It is moist, love the gel texture, no white cast, not sticky, sinks in fast and no heavy scent. I highly recommend it!
What's your everyday makeup routine like? What are your go-to products?
I always apply a cushion foundation. My all time favourite is the APRILSKIN Black Magic Snow Cushion and the Troiareuke A+ Cushion. After applying foundation, I use a concealer to cover any dark spots that I have. I love doing my brows and currently obsessed with orange and red eyeshadows. A must for me is the KatvonD eyeliner, the only eyeliner that doesn’t smudge on my oily eyelids. I finish it off with powder and my Nars orgasm blush and any lip tint that I feel like that day.
What's your night time skincare routine? What are your go-to products?
I always love double cleansing, my current favourite cleansing balm is the Abybom ultra watery eoseongcho cleanser and Clinique take the day off cleansing balm. As for second cleanse, I love the Innisfree blueberry rebalancing pH 5.5 cleanser. I follow the whole Korean beauty routine, so I continue with a toner, essence, serum, eye cream, moisturizer and night cream or sleeping mask. My favourite sleeping mask is the sulwhasoo overnight vitalizing mask ex, and the Glow recipe watermelon glow sleeping mask.
If you were to recommend 5 Kbeauty products for a friend who's never tried K-Beauty before, what 5 products would they be?
I would recommend the affordable ones that are also my favourite and are suitable for all skin types. So I would recommend the Dear Klairs Supple Preparation Facial Toner, Cosrx Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence, Earth’s recipe sun gel, Abybom Ultra Cool leaf masks. I would definitely recommend using good sheet masks, I love the ones from innisfree too which are really affordable. And at last, the Cosrx oil-free ultra moisturizing lotion with birch sap.
Is there any Kbeauty product (skincare or makeup) that is currently on your wish list?
The whole Sulwhasoo range! It is pretty expensive, so I need to save up to get a few Sulwhasoo gems. Also, I have always been curious about Shangpree products, but haven’t tried much of it yet.
Finally, do you have any advice for any KBeauty lover who is thinking of blogging on IG too?
Be yourself, don’t copy others. Also, make sure your pictures are of great lighting, it’s definitely a must on IG.
This or that
Skincare or makeup
Skincare for me! You can’t have a nice makeup look if your skin ain’t good. Treat your skin well!
Pizza or hotdogs
I am not a pizza fan neither a hotdog fan, but if I really had to choose, I would choose a pepperoni pizza with a thin crust.
Netflix or Cinema
Netflix is slow with new releases, I would choose cinema. The special effects, large screen and the sound. I just love watching movies in the cinema. And now there is 4DX, where the chairs move, and wind is blowing out of the chairs which really gives an amazing experience while watching the movie.
Early bird or night owl
Definitely a night owl haha, I normally sleep at 2am and I love to sleep in. I really don’t like to wake up early.
Summer or Winter
Call me weird, but I rather have it cold than hot. I love layering my clothes, wear scarves and boots. Staying cozy inside, under a blanket drinking hot tea is my thing.
Fill the gaps
Favourite Korean dish – bibimbap and kimbap. I love kimchi too, though that is more of a side dish ☺.
Favourite Kpop band – Is bigbang still alive? Hahah, it’s still my all-time favourite. I love Black pink as well!
Fav spot in the world – Amsterdam! Wherever I go, I am always happy when I am back in Amsterdam, it is where home is.
Fav item of clothing now – I need my scarf, otherwise I will catch a cold during this cold weather. I also see it as a nice accessory that adds a color to my outfit.
Fav song – Black Pink – DDU-DU DDU-DU, my body just moves whenever I hear this song. Love the song Solo from Jennie as well.
Fav movie – I don’t really have one, but I love watching sci-fi movies.
