KBeauty Stars of Instagram: Interview with Elie (@glowing.kitty)

Hey Elie (@glowing.kitty), thanks for taking part! Can you tell us a bit more about yourself?

Sure! I’m a 22 years old Canadian girl who’s been living in Berlin for a year now. I speak English, French, Spanish, and I’m currently trying to learn German. I have a degree in Social Work. I like fitness, reading, and hanging out with my friends. My skin type is dry and dehydrated in the winter, and I’m lucky to be rarely breaking out. My IG page focuses on reviews of products that are hydrating, nourishing, moisturizing, and helping me achieve a nice glow, rather than acne-fighting.

How did you discover KBeauty?

As a teenager, I wasn’t very interested in skincare because I didn’t have any other issues than dry skin. Winters were really bad because I would get flaky and peeling skin (I wasn’t even applying moisturizer every day..). At some point, I just started looking skincare Youtube videos and subreddits, and I got very interested in Kbeauty.

What was it that got you obsessed with Kbeauty?

At first, it was a mix of the price and the fact that it was very different from Western skincare. Then, the most I got into skincare and started researching it, looking at ingredients, the most I was impressed by the quality of the products I was getting for such a low price.

I love how you mix KBeauty and Western beauty together on your IG page. Do you notice a difference between KBeauty and Western skincare?

Yes, I think they’re different in terms of philosophy, advertisement, ingredients and often prices. Since starting my IG page, I have been trying to look more into Western brands and products because I like to review and compare things. Now that I look at the ingredients list before buying products, I often decide not to buy a Western product I was interested in because they often contain drying alcohols, fragrance, and pigments, and other harsh ingredients.

What's your everyday morning skincare routine?

Steps and products will depend on the season, but in the morning I’m always focusing on hydrating and moisturizing my skin. I never use a cleanser in the morning because it dries out my skin even more. I just use water or a cleansing water instead. Then I’ll apply my usual steps: toner, essence, serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen. I also like to use Vitamin C in the morning. The products I’ll use for these steps will vary depending on what I’m testing at the moment.

What's your everyday makeup routine like?

Korean makeup is not something I have dove in yet, so my makeup routine consists of Western brands. I will always use a concealer under my eyes and mascara. Most of the times that’s enough, but if I have a bit more time I’ll apply a BB cream, some bronzer, and highlighter.

What's your night time skincare routine?

The evening is the moment I like to use chemical exfoliants. I will double cleanse first with a cleansing balm or oil + a cream or gel cleanser, then 3-4 times a week I will use AHA and BHA. Then I’ll proceed with my other steps (toner, essence, serum, moisturizer). 3-4 times a week I like doing sheet masks because they help to keep my skin hydrated and they’re a relaxing experience for me. Finally, I apply a facial oil (I’m loving Squalane lately)  and a sleeping mask (both on my face and lips!). I like my night time routine to be long because it’s my way of relaxing after a long day.

If you were to recommend 5 Kbeauty products for a friend who's never tried KBeauty before, what 5 products would they be?

The Face Shop Rice Water Cleansing Rich Oil - The first cleansing oil I fell in love with. I keep trying other ones but nothing beats The Face Shop one. It removes makeup effectively, the thickness of the oil is perfect, and it’s really inexpensive.

Dr Jart Ceramidin or Cicapair creams - I actually made a post on IG explaining the difference between them, but I own both and I LOVE them! They’re really thick creams that work so well in the winter.

Sioris Time is Running out Mist - This mist feels so nice on the skin, smells divine and contains amazing ingredients. I have repurchased it when emptied, and it’s rare that I repurchase products since I like to try new ones.

Klavuu Nourishing Care Lip Sleeping Pack - This is always on my nightstand I and apply it religiously before going to bed. I like this sleeping mask better than the Laneige one. The texture is amazing and it smells like vanilla. It stays for a very long time on my lips.

Purito Fermented Complex 94 Boosting Essence - My favorite product with ferments. The texture is similar to a viscous toner and it also contains Niacinamide. It really brightens and evens out my skin tone.

Is there any Kbeauty product (skincare or makeup) that is currently on your wish list?

I’m looking for a new Propolis serum and I was recommended the one from Skinfood. I’m also seeing a lot of the Keep Cool Bamboo Soothe Toner on IG and I think it would be great for summer. But I’m trying to buy fewer products since I have so much to try in my stash!

What is your most memorable and loved KBeauty product? Any story behind it that you'd like to share?

It’s not a specific product but a category: toners. It’s not really a thing in Western skincare, but it’s probably the one thing that made the biggest difference for my skin that really was lacking hydration. Toners are now my favorite kind of products!
